박관욱은 작품을 제작하는 데 있어 사물을 재현하는 데 관심을 두는 것이 아니라 사물 자체를 보고 느끼는 것에 관심이 있다고 주장한다. 여기서 그가 말하는 사물이란 눈앞의 대상이나 작품제작에 사용하는 다양한 재료만이 아니라 인간과 사회를 바라보는 그의 태도 등을 포함한다. 이러한 태도는 그의 작품에 등장하는 우연적이고 모호한 형상을 이해하는 데 중요한 단서를 제공한다. 사실 그는 분명한 의도나 주제를 염두에 두고 작업에 착수하지 않는다. 확실히 알지 못하는 모호한 것을 갖고 작업에 들어가며 재료와 부딪히는 과정에서 그 모호한 것에 대한 생각에 변화가 일어난다. 그렇게 하여 완성된 결과물을 보며 떠오르는 인상, 느낌 등을 고려하여 제목을 정한다. 모든 존재와의 소통을 꿈꾸는 박관욱은 생명의 진화가 기계적이고 목적론적으로 전개되는 것이 아니라 다양한 모순들이 뒤엉켜 동적인 관계를 맺으며 전개된다고 믿으며, 끊임없이 대안적 가치와 윤리를 모색하고 모순과 갈등 너머의 세계를 상상한다. 그에게 선 긋는 행위는 “형상을 표현하는 것과 동시에..., 머리와 손의 운동,” 다시 말해 그의 전 존재가 작업에 몰입해 있다는 의미를 지닌다.
