김기라는 영상, 회화, 조각, 설치미술, 퍼포먼스, 아트디렉팅 등 다양한 매체를 활용하여 개념을 표현하는 데 한계를 두지 않고, 늘 작업의 새로운 가능성을 선보이는 작가이다.
그의 작품은 현대 사회의 이면을 주요 소재로 삼아 예술가로서의 사회적 역할과 책임에 대한 메시지를 적극적으로 전달한다. 현재 펼쳐지고 있는 사회적 현상을 본질적인 주제로 설정하고, 역사와 현재, 미래를 잇는 과정 속에서 단편적으로 해석되거나 간과되는 상황들의 본질과 이면을 탐구한다. 그는 이러한 작업을 통해 담론을 형성하는 매개자로서의 역할을 자처한다.

이번 개인전은 본화랑과 웅갤러리의 연합 기획전으로, 3개 층을 각각 하나의 챕터로 구성한다. 특히, 이번 전시에서는 그의 드로잉 작업을 중심으로 그간 진행해온 다양한 프로젝트의 흐름을 조망한다. 전시 공간마다 그의 드로잉 시리즈와 함께 드로잉에 등장한 오브제 및 설치 작품들이 각 공간의 특성에 맞게 자연스럽게 연출되며, 각각의 주제는 하나의 실루엣으로 완성되어 관객에게 새로운 시각적, 개념적 경험을 선사할 것이다.
작가의 드로잉 시리즈는 프로젝트 작업을 시작하기 전 자신의 생각을 정리하는 수행 과정에서 탄생한다. 이 과정에서 그는 개념을 다듬고 사유를 확장하며, 무의식 속에서 떠오르는 조형적 요소들을 구체화한다. 한지 위에 형형색색으로 펼쳐진 그의 에너지는 설치, 퍼포먼스, 조각, 영상 등 다양한 작업 속에서 암호처럼 자리잡으며 그의 예술적 사고를 드러낸다.
불확실성이 더욱 가중된 시대에, 이번 전시가 오늘날의 사회적 현상과 그 이면을 새롭게 인식할 계기가 되기를 바라며, 단순한 사회적 인지를 넘어 각자의 삶에 대한 성찰로 이어지는 개인적 경험이 되기를 기대한다.
Kim Ki-ra is an artist who transcends boundaries by employing a variety of mediums—including video, painting, sculpture, installation art, performance, and art directing—to express conceptual ideas and continuously explore new creative possibilities.
His work centers on the hidden layers of modern society, actively conveying messages about the social responsibilities and roles of an artist. By making contemporary social phenomena his core theme, he delves into the essence and underlying aspects of situations that are often interpreted fragmentarily or overlooked, linking history, the present, and the future. Through his practice, he embraces the role of a mediator who unveils these layers and sparks meaningful discourse.
Kim Ki-ra’s installations, videos, and performance pieces evoke moments of quiet emotion and introspection. Notably, his “Festival” performance—presented at the Gwangju Biennale and Prada Mode—captured the experience of diverse people from various nationalities and genres coming together in one space. Through multiple projects and art directing, he seamlessly fuses elements from both popular and classical realms—such as music and dance—within a unified framework. Moreover, in his object presentations, he flexibly integrates experimental approaches with public sensibilities, metaphorically embedding profound philosophical and social messages within a lively, pop-inspired aesthetic. His work is characterized by its warm embrace of even the most challenging themes, inviting audiences to see the world from fresh perspectives.
This solo exhibition, jointly curated by Bonhwa Gallery and Ung Gallery, is structured into three distinct chapters spread across different floors. Central to the exhibition is his drawing series, which reflects the continuum of his various projects. In each space, his drawings, alongside corresponding objects and installations, are thoughtfully presented to harmonize with the unique characteristics of the environment, with each theme forming a singular silhouette that offers viewers a new visual and conceptual experience.
Kim Ki-ra’s drawing series originates from a process of introspection—a method of organizing his thoughts before embarking on a project. Through this process, he refines his concepts, broadens his contemplations, and gives concrete form to the sculptural elements emerging from his subconscious. The vibrant energy that unfolds on hanji (traditional Korean paper) becomes a kind of code within his installations, performances, sculptures, and videos, revealing the substance of his artistic vision.
In an era marked by growing uncertainty, we hope this exhibition will serve as an opportunity to reassess contemporary social phenomena and their hidden dimensions.
